In complex infrastructure and construction projects, many processes run in parallel. Modern construction site management therefore relies on digital tools to implement construction diaries, reporting, defect management or safety audits. The Austrian software company PlanRadar is a pioneer in this field. With its digital platform, it enables the administration of tasks, documentation and communication for fully integrated construction site planning.
In a joint project, VRVis and PlanRadar are currently working on an Augmented Reality solution that can identify the floor plan of a room in dry construction via a just few reference points and locate it in the three-dimensional Building Information Modeling (BIM) model, in other models and even 2D plans. This all works without the need for AR glasses or complex, expensive scans. Precisely locating defects or clearly communicating work tasks is time-consuming in day-to-day construction and requires a lot of contextual information. These ongoing changes must then be simultaneously recorded in the BIM model or on the 2D plans. The design of Onsite-AR by VRVis and PlanRadar significantly simplifies and accelerates these processes.
AR tracking on construction sites using iPhone or iPad
Positioning via GPS is not reliable on construction sites. To allow project managers and all those on site to move efficiently and precisely, PlanRadar and VRVis rely on onsite tracking via iPhones or iPads. The AR tracking uses very few reference points (windows, doors, walls) and is easy to use in practice. Pictures or 360° panoramas for documentation can also be created with the devices and immediately stored at the specific location within the digital plan. The accuracy of "Onsite-AR" is inch-perfect and even works with incomplete sets of data. Essential processes in the construction industry such as the documentation of defects as well as their correction, inspections or audits for quality assurance can be significantly improved with this application.

The Rail4Future project is focusing on the design of a digital rail system for the future. To this end, a novel and fully virtual validation platform for large-scale simulations of entire rail lines is being developed to increase the efficiency of existing rail infrastructure.
