With their paper "HORA 3D: Personalized Flood Risk Visualisation as an Interactive Web Service", Silvana Rauer-Zechmeister and her co-authors from the Integrated Simulations team at VRVis, Prof. Günter Blöschl and Prof. Eduard Gröller from TU Wien and Raimund Heidrich-Ressnik (RIOCOM) has convinced the award committee of this year´s EuroVis conference. The publication receives a Best Paper Award, due to the excellent applicability of the system, the comprehensive evaluation and the intuitive means for risk communication. Silvana Rauer-Zechmeister will present the paper about HORA 3D following the opening and keynote speech at EuroVis 2024 in Odense.
Understanding personal risks from flooding in 3D
HORA 3D was presented publicly in June 2023 as an extension of HORA, a digital map for natural hazards for the whole of Austria. The free web application is unique worldwide, providing residents with tangible 3D visualizations that realistically depict the risks of flooding to their homes and properties. Thus, it is an essential tool for understandable climate communication. The basis for HORA 3D are large, pre-calculated flood hazard maps and geodata, from which the application extracts relevant information. Within seconds, the website displays detailed yet comprehensible flood scenarios; the research team has combined various new and existing techniques for real-time 3D visualization and interaction.
Best practice cooperation between research and professionals
The EuroVis award committee honors HORA 3D for successfully implementing visualizations to tackle real-world challenges. For the examiners, the paper "HORA 3D: Personalized Flood Risk Visualization as an Interactive Web Service" demonstrates a compelling example of how visualization technologies can be translated into professional solutions.
